Bet Types Explained: From a Single to a Jackpot Ticket

The bet type you choose decides more about your results than most single predictions do. The same three opinions about three matches can be placed as three singles, one accumulator or a small system, and each choice gives a different chance of getting paid. This page walks through the bet types you are likely to meet on a betting slip, with worked examples in Kenyan shillings, so you can compare them before staking anything at iLOTBet or anywhere else.

Single bets: one prediction, one result

A single is the plainest format: one selection, one stake, one outcome. Back a team at 1.80 with KSh 200 and a win returns KSh 360. Singles keep every decision separate, so a wrong call costs only its own stake and a right call is never cancelled by someone else's late goal. They are also the only format where you can honestly measure your own judgement over time, because each result stands alone in your history.

Kenyan law sets the minimum online stake at 20 shillings, so a licensed operator should not accept anything smaller. That floor matters most for singles players who like to spread a small weekly budget across many separate picks.

Accumulators: single/parlay and the multiplication trap

The single/parlay choice is the first fork on any slip. A parlay, often called an accumulator or multibet, joins several selections into one bet; the odds multiply and every leg must win. Four legs at 1.70 each give total odds of about 8.35, so KSh 100 could return KSh 835. That is the attraction. The catch is that the probabilities multiply too: if each leg truly has a 55 per cent chance, all four win together only about 9 per cent of the time.

The bookmaker's margin also compounds. A margin of around five per cent on each leg becomes roughly twenty per cent on a four-leg accumulator, which is why long multibets are the most profitable product a sportsbook sells. If you enjoy them, keep them short and treat the stake as entertainment money.

Handicap betting

A handicap gives one side a virtual head start so that a lopsided match becomes a closer price. With a −1 handicap on the favourite, the team must win by two goals for the bet to win; a one-goal win loses. Asian handicaps refine the idea with half and quarter lines: a −0.5 line simply means "must win", while a −1.0 line returns the stake if the team wins by exactly one. Handicaps are useful when the favourite's ordinary price is too short to be interesting and you believe the gap between the teams is real.

Over/under totals

The over/under market ignores who wins and asks whether a number finishes above or below a line: goals in football, runs in cricket, games in tennis, points in basketball. Lines end in .5 so that there is no tie. Totals suit bettors who read playing styles rather than results: two cautious defensive teams can be a sound under even when you have no idea who will win.

System bets: insurance inside the slip

A system bet places every combination of a chosen size from your selections. A "2 from 3" system, for example, turns three picks into three doubles: A+B, A+C and B+C. Each double is a separate stake, so a KSh 50 unit costs KSh 150 in total. If two of the three picks win, one double pays; if all three win, all three pay. For the same total outlay a system pays less than an accumulator when everything comes in, but one wrong pick no longer sinks the whole ticket. Larger systems, such as "3 from 5", add many more combinations and grow expensive quickly, so count the lines before confirming.

Jackpot-style multi-pick tickets

A multi-match jackpot looks like an accumulator but works like a lottery. You predict home, draw or away for every match on a fixed list, pay one ticket price, and compete for a pool rather than for odds. The result is not multiplied odds but a share of the prize for every ticket that gets all the results right. With three outcomes per match, the number of possible tickets grows as three to the power of the number of matches: 1,594,323 combinations for thirteen matches. Some jackpots let you pay for extra combinations on one ticket by choosing two outcomes for a match, which doubles the cost of the ticket for each such "double". Whether such a product exists on your iLOTBet account, how many matches it has and how the pool is split are the operator's rules; check them in the account. The lotto logic behind these tickets is explained further in our sports betting guide.

Choosing a format that fits your budget

A simple rule of thumb: the more your result depends on many things going right at once, the more of your stake is really buying entertainment rather than value. Singles suit careful bettors and small budgets. Short accumulators suit occasional fun. Systems suit players who want some protection inside a combination. Jackpot tickets suit a fixed weekly amount you would spend on a lottery anyway. Whatever you choose, decide the weekly amount first and fund the account with that amount only, for example through M-Pesa if the cashier offers it.
